Background of the study
Deforestation not only affects biodiversity and climate but can also have profound impacts on cultural heritage. In Ile-Ife, Osun State, widespread tree clearance for agricultural expansion and urban development has endangered numerous cultural heritage sites. These sites, which are integral to the historical and cultural identity of the community, face risks from altered microclimates, soil erosion, and landscape degradation (Okechukwu, 2023). This study examines the interrelationship between deforestation and the preservation of cultural heritage in Ile-Ife. Deforestation can lead to the deterioration of site integrity, undermining both the physical structure and the symbolic significance of heritage landmarks (Chukwu, 2024). Recent conservation literature underscores the need for integrated environmental and cultural management strategies to protect these sites. By analyzing historical land cover data, current forest management practices, and the condition of heritage sites, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of deforestation’s impact. Ultimately, this study seeks to propose strategies that balance development needs with the conservation of cultural identity and heritage (Amadi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Cultural heritage sites in Ile-Ife are increasingly at risk due to deforestation. The loss of tree cover has accelerated soil erosion, disrupted local ecosystems, and compromised the structural integrity of heritage landmarks. Despite recognition of these risks, there is insufficient integration of environmental conservation and heritage preservation in local policies. This lack of comprehensive management strategies threatens the preservation of cultural identity and historical legacy, necessitating urgent research to assess impacts and propose balanced interventions (Okechukwu, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
• To assess the impact of deforestation on the integrity of cultural heritage sites in Ile-Ife.
• To evaluate the environmental changes affecting these sites.
• To recommend integrated strategies for heritage and environmental conservation.
Research questions:
• How does deforestation affect the physical integrity of cultural heritage sites in Ile-Ife?
• What environmental changes resulting from deforestation impact these sites?
• What conservation strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation on cultural heritage?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Deforestation is significantly correlated with increased degradation of cultural heritage sites.
• H2: Environmental changes from deforestation adversely affect the structural stability of heritage landmarks.
• H3: Integrated conservation strategies can effectively protect cultural heritage from deforestation impacts.
Significance of the study
This study is significant for linking environmental management with cultural heritage conservation. Its findings will aid policymakers and conservationists in developing strategies that safeguard both natural resources and cultural identity, ensuring the longevity of heritage sites in Ile-Ife (Amadi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the effects of deforestation on cultural heritage sites in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Definitions of terms:
• Deforestation: The removal of trees and vegetation from an area.
• Cultural Heritage Sites: Locations of historical and cultural significance.
• Heritage Conservation: The practice of protecting and preserving cultural heritage.
